Background of the Study
Accounting graduates in Nigeria face numerous challenges as they transition from academic environments to the workforce. These challenges range from skill gaps and limited job opportunities to difficulty in meeting the expectations of professional bodies such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) (Okafor & Sani, 2023).
Covenant University, one of Nigeria’s leading private institutions, is renowned for its commitment to academic excellence and holistic education. Despite the university’s efforts to equip students with the knowledge and skills required for success, its accounting graduates still encounter barriers in their professional journeys. Factors such as limited exposure to practical accounting tools, industry-specific requirements, and challenges in obtaining professional certifications often hinder their progress (Adeola & Usman, 2024).
This study investigates the challenges faced by accounting graduates from Covenant University, focusing on skill gaps, professional development, and employment opportunities.
Statement of the Problem
The employability of accounting graduates in Nigeria is frequently questioned due to perceived inadequacies in their practical skills, technological proficiency, and adaptability to workplace demands. Graduates from Covenant University, despite their strong academic backgrounds, are not immune to these challenges (Olowu & Bello, 2023).
The lack of alignment between academic curricula and industry needs further exacerbates these issues, leading to underemployment or unemployment among graduates. Addressing these challenges is essential to improve the career prospects of accounting graduates and enhance the reputation of academic institutions.
